Big Korean Beauty - Did They Have to have a Food- themed Fashion Shoot?

This Korean Vogue Girl "Big Beauty" Fashion Spread features a very adorable model who seems to be big busted and healthy rather than all around plus-size if you ask me. I saw the icon to this spread and was thrilled to see an Asian model of these proportions for the first time in my life! Then... I saw the pictures (and as much as I love food) I thought this was so degrading. I wanted to give her a hug and tell her she is so much more than this food monger they portray. (Update 3/13/10 - I think my thoughts are being read as I believed the photographer was mocking her weight when in fact I think he/she thought this was an open-minded shoot! I believe the intentions were good, but the idea we have to make a statement about a models personal life if she is ever outside of the norm, is what is close-minded.)

What are your thoughts?

I see what you mean - she is stunning. More so than most of the skeletal models you see. But then... being a big gal who loves my food... my eyes are drawn to the pizza... and the handbag cake... and I wouldn't have turned down the shoot either...

I am so bad! I would be like ... degrade me but let me scoff the pizza! *goes and hides face in shame*

I actually really really like this shoot. The model is absolutely adorable~ I don't think it's intentionally trying to be degrading, I think its the other way round.
She's super cute girl whose happy to go go against the norms of being skinny and is clearly conformable in her own skin. She's stylish, has a cute guy and doesn't give a crap about the amount of food she eats, wouldn't we all like to be like that?

Emmie - I can see your perspective completely, and I thought about that option too, but to finally feature a healthier a model and make a statement about her obsession with food seems to be ridiculous. If this was an interview of some kind, it would be different, but a shoot directed entirely by some outside source paints things differently. I mean she's barely even heavy! and to have no inspiration outside of this girl loves to eat is very degrading. What about her love to sing, dance, read... I don't know. The worst is to make this "fat" stereotype of a girl who is a healthy weight and probably eats as much as I do is really strange.

Hear, hear Emmie :D

...its like can't they treat her like any other beauty. do they have to make a statement about her weight because god forbid we open the magazine and think whoa why would they feature this heavier girl. do they make statements about what other models do with food? no they just photograph them in clothes and never is their personal habits expressed.

I see what you and emmie mean, but I do think it's kinda sad. :l

I think maybe the purpose was to say hey i can eat whatever i want and STILL be beautiful and sexy AND have a hot man by my side! I can see where it looks bad with all the food and her being a little chunky but maybe the point was to say you dont have to look like you are on death's bed to be beautiful and that life is too short NOT to eat what you want and still be able to look sexy doing it! idk though it could be taken either way!

Clairey - i agree.

Christyne J - I love the statement you both are saying it trying to be expressed (eat whatever the hell and be beautiful) but like i said why does one have to make a statement when putting a healthy girl in a magazine. we don't make statements with other models. when its a black model we don't DARE make a statement about her personal habits and lifestyle. we let her be beautiful.

i totally agree! why did they have to use food!
shes so pretty
and that boy model
woahh!! hottie!

Keely Valentine - oh yes, the boy model... mmmmmmm

I would have thought this insulting if it was not for the hottie who is obviously her boy toy in the shoot - In a way I agree with Emmie.

But do I think the shoot was a good idea? No way! The fashion industry rarely uses models who aren't skin and bones so when the do use on and she has piles of food around her it is the first thing you see and it seems to be saying "I'm a fatty and I like to eat tons and tons of food every hour on the hour!".

There were better choices that could have been made but I don't think it was supposed to be insulting to anyone or the model.

Sensible Obsessions - oh i never thought they were being insulting at allllll... i think the intentions were the same as you and Emmie described. they thought hey she is cool with eating food and being herself. i'm saying that what they didn't realize is they were acting very close-minded while attempting to seem open minded, in feeling they had to draw attention to her weight.

I love this..

yes, that can be an insult.

However, man her man is HOTT.

who is that beauty next to her?

She is quite a beauty herself.. reminds me of Emilie in le fabuleax destin d'amelie poulain. <3
